Life & career pathways
Student progress in Riviera’s Broadcasting & Journalism program is assessed through a portfolio of authentic work, including broadcast segments, news stories, yearbook contributions, multimedia projects, and on-air performances. As students move through the program, they are evaluated with increasing expectations in writing, reporting, research, production, editing, storytelling, and presentation.
Ongoing instructor feedback, project reviews, and performance-based assessments help students strengthen their skills and grow as confident communicators and media creators. Families are kept informed through progress reports, teacher communication, student showcases, and opportunities to engage with student-produced content throughout the year.
Riviera's Broadcasting & Journalism program helps students build skills that reach far beyond the newsroom. Through hands-on work in storytelling, reporting, interviewing, and multimedia production, students strengthen communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and media literacy while learning the principles of responsible journalism and effective communication.
As part of Riviera’s wider commitment to whole-child development, students also benefit from opportunities that build confidence, leadership, resilience, and decision-making through programs such as Thrive Time, leadership experiences, clubs, and service. Working on authentic projects teaches students to manage deadlines, contribute in team-based settings, evaluate information thoughtfully, and create content that informs and engages an audience.
At the Prep campus, Riviera students build fluency and cultural appreciation through World Languages courses in Spanish, Italian, and French. These classes sharpen communication skills and inspire students to engage with varied traditions, perspectives, and global settings.
Their progress is measured through consistent grades and assessments that help guide growth in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. When relevant, students may also prepare for AP exams, supporting Riviera’s profile as a Miami school with advanced placement opportunities.
Students gain real-world experience through WRIV - Riviera’s daily student-led broadcast, where they take on roles such as anchors, producers, editors, reporters, and technical directors. Working with professional-grade broadcasting equipment and technology, students produce news segments, feature stories, and multimedia content that keeps the school community informed and connected. They also contribute to yearbook production, digital publishing, photography, video production, and content development, applying industry-relevant practices in an authentic learning environment.
Beyond daily production, WRIV students have opportunities to showcase their talents in regional and national broadcasting competitions. Competing alongside students from other schools and receiving feedback from industry professionals helps them refine their technical abilities, strengthen their storytelling, and raise the quality of their work.
The Broadcasting & Journalism program introduces students to a wide range of career pathways, including journalism, broadcasting, communications, digital media, public relations, marketing, content creation, and multimedia production. Through hands-on experiences, access to professional technology, and opportunities to build a portfolio of published and broadcast work, students gain meaningful insight into the communications industry.
The program also prepares students for collegiate study in journalism, communications, media production, public relations, and related fields. Along the way, students develop versatile, transferable skills that are highly valued across nearly every profession.
Riviera’s Journalism and Broadcasting program has given me exposure to so many aspects of the industry, from working with news anchors and learning from professional news stations to competing in organizations such as STN and FSPA. Since starting the program in ninth grade, I’ve grown tremendously in my ability to research, write scripts, and feel confident on camera. The hands-on experience has allowed me to develop skills I know I’ll carry with me into college and beyond.
