How we learn

Our learning approach

At Riviera Schools, learning is a purposeful journey of growth in knowledge, skills, and understanding. As a private school in Miami, Riviera combines academic excellence with personal growth, helping students build confidence, communication, and strong relationships as they prepare for success in school and beyond.

Through Social Skills for Life and Thrive Time, students develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Assemblies, guest speakers, advisory groups, and everyday school experiences help these skills become part of daily life across the Riviera community.

Social Skills for Life curriculum

At Riviera’s Prep Campus, the Social Skills for Life curriculum comes to life through Thrive Time, guided instruction, and everyday student experiences that build confidence, communication, responsible decision-making, and the habits and mindset needed for private school college preparation and long-term success.

Thrive Time

Thrive Time takes place every Wednesday and Friday (9:36am – 10:12am) and is an important part of our school week.

On Wednesdays, students meet in small advisory groups where staff facilitate lessons from the Second Step Curriculum. These lessons focus on Social Skills for Life (SSL), giving students regular opportunities to practice self-awareness, empathy, communication, and thoughtful decision-making.

Thrive Time

A culture of growth

These lessons are reinforced well beyond advisory time and become part of the broader student experience.

  • At the Prep Campus, students engage in small advisory groups and school-wide gatherings where SSL lessons are explicitly taught and practiced
  • School culture and community - Assemblies, pep rallies, and guest speakers reinforce empathy, collaboration, and responsible decision-making
  • Classroom integration - Teachers weave these skills into academic lessons, encouraging students to reflect on their learning, work collaboratively, and make thoughtful choices
  • Extracurricular activities - Athletics, clubs, and service opportunities provide real-world contexts for students to practice teamwork, resilience, and leadership

Developing future-ready skills

By consistently embedding these skills across the curriculum, school culture, and co-curricular experiences, Riviera students develop the confidence, communication, and decision-making abilities needed to thrive academically, socially, and personally.

This intentional approach prepares students for success both now and in the future, equipping them with habits and mindsets that last well beyond the classroom.

Where learning comes first

Most schools talk about what they teach. We focus on how your child learns. Through the Learning.First™ approach, students reflect on their progress, explore new approaches and make decisions that drive their growth.

Curiosity fuels our learning

The best learning happens when students are actively engaged. We ignite curiosity through hands-on projects and inquiry-based learning, making learning exciting, memorable, and full of exploration.

Confidence drives lifelong learning

Our students trust in their abilities, build confidence, and lead their way forward. This mindset helps them believe they can learn and achieve anything, fostering a love for lifelong learning.

The power of 'Good Struggles'

We believe great learning happens just beyond the comfort zone. That's why we create purposeful challenges, or 'good struggles', that help students stay motivated while they grow. Through these experiences, students build resilience, solve problems, and learn to keep going – even when it's hard.

Teachers as co-pilots

Learning here is a partnership. Teachers work alongside students as guides, helping them navigate choices, embrace good struggles, inspire those 'aha' moments of self-discovery, and grow in confidence.

Learning that keeps getting better

We do not assume that good teaching automatically means good learning. Through ISP’s Learning Improvement Process (LIP), teachers and leaders look closely at what students are learning, where they are making progress and where something needs to change.

That means we keep learning from what happens in classrooms and use that evidence to improve what happens next. For your child, it means a school that does not stand still -  one that keeps asking how learning can be better.
