The Riviera Bulldogs faced Divine Savior on November 4th at Riviera Schools, where they lost 4-0 in a hard-fought game. It was the season opener and set higher expectations for the team this upcoming season. Following this season’s tryouts, the roster now features a mix of experienced upperclassmen and promising younger players. According to Assistant Coach Mike, the combination of leadership and new energy could be the key to success. “The atmosphere at tryouts was intense in a good way,” Coach Mike said. “You could tell the returning players wanted to build on last year, and the new guys brought skill. This year is already coming together, and that’s something different this year.” One of those returning players is Junior Lucas Berlanga, known for his work ethic and consistency in the center of the field. “Last year, I was hurt and couldn’t play, so this year I plan to play as if I never left the field,” Berlanga said. We all want the same thing: to make it to districts because I only have two years left.” For senior Steven Brooks, this season carries extra meaning. Brooks said his focus is on setting an example for the younger teammates while pushing for team success. “I’ve been with this team since freshman year, and I’ve seen it grow a lot,” Brooks said. “For me, it’s about leaving the program better than I found it and hopefully leading the guys to districts before I graduate.” Coach Philly said he’s emphasized discipline and conditioning throughout preseason training. “We’re focusing on the little things, the details that make the difference in close games,” Philly said. “Our players know the expectations, and they’re responding with maturity. That’s the sign of a growing program.” Coach Philly said he hopes these early games will set the tone for a consistent, competitive season. As the season continues, the Bulldogs aren’t just looking for wins; they’re looking to make a statement. “Last year was about learning,” Brooks said. “This year is about proving we belong.” The Bulldogs closed last season with a record that reflected both progress and potential. While they didn’t advance past the regular season, their improvement in teamwork, communication, and fitness set a strong foundation for the future. Coaches and players alike believe that this year could mark a turning point for the program. “We made big strides last year,” Head Coach Philly said, who enters his second season leading the Bulldogs. “We faced tough competition, but every match showed us how much we’re capable of. This season, we’re not just aiming to compete; we want to win and make our presence known in districts.” While last year’s record remains a reminder of how far they’ve come, this year’s preparation shows how far they are ready to go.
